JAKARTA - The English Premier League on Friday night announced it was donating 2,000 automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to amateur clubs and other facilities to help with heart attack emergencies. It is hoped that the fatal incident that befell the footballer Christian Eriksen can be minimized.
The Premier League's Defribilator Funding Initiative is being undertaken with the FA and the non-profit Football Foundation, with the first phase of the AED to be allocated to a Football Foundation funded facility.
In the second phase, amateur clubs who receive similar facilities will be given the opportunity to apply for defibrillator financing, according to an announcement on the Premier League's official website.
The first thousand units are scheduled to start being allocated at the start of the rolling 2021/22 season and the second batch is expected to be distributed in September 2021.
The distributed defibrillators are expected to cover approximately 1.5 million people who use these facilities each season.
All recipients of defibrillator assistance will later be required to have at least one successful person attend the FA's online heart attack management training.
The move is a positive response for the Premier League and football in England following the collapse of Danish star Christian Eriksen during Euro 2020.
"The traumatic incident we witnessed when Christian Eriksen collapsed presents an urgent understanding that defibrillators must be accessible to footballers in general," said Premier League CEO Richard Masters.
The initiative has received a positive response from former Bolton Wanderes midfielder Fabrice Muamba, who suffered a heart attack in 2012.
"I strongly support the initiative to bring thousands of defibrillators to these amateur clubs. Personally I know very well how important access to this kind of medical equipment is to save the life of someone having a heart attack," he said.
