Benefiting From Group B And C Results, Switzerland Is Declared To Have Qualified For The Round Of 16

JAKARTA - Switzerland qualified for the last 16 of Euro 2020 without kicking the ball because they benefited from the results of matches in other groups.

As reported by Reuters on Tuesday, Switzerland will face Belgium who won Group B or winners of Group E or F, which will be decided on Wednesday.

Switzerland's decision to qualify came a day after they beat Turkey 3-1 in Baku in their last game in Group A but finished third behind Italy who won all three of their group stage games and Wales who are both on four points but lost on goal difference.

In order to secure a knockout spot then Switzerland would need to be one of the four best third-placed teams until the end of the Euro 2020 group stage, but their fate is unclear after Sunday's victory.

However, the final results of the Group B and C matches, showed that the third-placed teams in this group only collected three points, ensuring that Switzerland remained in this tournament.

In Group B, Finland finished third with three points, also in Group C where Ukraine also finished third with three points. Both teams lost in their last match. They will now have to wait to see if they continue in Euro 2020.

Switzerland had planned to take part in Monday's matches but technical problems meant their departure from Baku was delayed by three hours. They only returned to their base in Rome after all those games were over.

Monday's results conclude England, France, Sweden, and the Czech Republic are through to the knockout stages regardless of their outcome on Tuesday and Wednesday.
