JAKARTA - The strategic steps taken by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenpora) received high appreciation from the Chairman of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Hetifah Sjaifudian.
This is related to cooperation with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemendisdakmen) in strengthening the development of the national sports ecosystem through the education sector.
After the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two Ministries, this cooperation is expected to focus on strengthening sports in elementary and secondary education units.
This decision is also considered an important step to build a more structured athlete training system from an early age.
According to Hetifah, the synergy between the education and sports sectors is the main foundation in creating a sustainable talent development path for national athletes.
"Commission X of the DPR RI welcomes the synergy between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education in strengthening the development of sports in schools. The sustainable training of athletes needs to start early through a planned and integrated education system," said Hetifah in an official statement quoted on Monday, March 16, 2026.
As a working partner of the two Ministries, Commission X of the DPR RI assesses that schools have a strategic role in building a culture of sports in the community as well as being an initial space to find and develop young athlete talent.
In this context, the strengthening of basic sports or mother sports such as athletics, swimming, and gymnastics is considered important as the foundation of the physical ability of students before they delve into certain sports.
Hetifah emphasized that this approach is in line with the spirit of Law Number 11 of 2022 concerning Sports which places sports education as one of the main pillars in the national sports system.
"Sports in schools not only build fitness, but also character, discipline, and cooperation. Therefore, strengthening the education sports ecosystem is a long-term investment for the development of Indonesian human resources," he said.
Furthermore, Hetifah emphasized the importance of sustainability of synergy between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Education and Culture. According to him, this cooperation needs to be strengthened through the improvement of sports facilities in schools, the development of competence of physical education teachers, and an integrated talent development system from the education level to the national achievement coaching.
Through a structured system, it is hoped that the process of finding and developing athletes can run more systematically.
"With strong synergy between the education and sports sectors, we can build a more systematic path for athlete training from elementary to secondary education so that it can strengthen Indonesia's sports achievements in the future," said Hetifah.
This cross-Ministry collaboration is one of the Government's strategic steps in building a sustainable national sports ecosystem while strengthening the foundation for Indonesia's sports achievements in the future.
