Maintaining Second Position at the 2025 SEA Games, Indonesia Has the Potential to Break a 30-Year Bad Record

The Indonesian contingent has the opportunity to break the 30-year record at the SEA Games (doc. NOC Indonesia).

JAKARTA - Indonesia has the potential to break the SEA Games' bad record if it manages to maintain its position in the medal standings in this year's edition in Bangkok and Chonburi, Thailand.

Currently, Indonesia is in second place in the standings with a collection of 62 gold medals. A total of 10 of these were obtained from matches taking place today, Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir said that if they managed to maintain that position, Indonesia would break the bad record as a guest team in the biennial multi-branch sports festival.

Indonesia last finished the SEA Games race in second place when it was a guest team three decades ago, precisely in the 1995 edition held in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

At that time, the Indonesian Contingent brought home 221 medals, consisting of 77 gold medals, 67 silver medals, and 77 bronze medals. After that, Indonesia has never been in second place when participating as a guest team.

"After that, we didn't manage to be in the top two, if we don't host. Let's break the bad record together," said Erick Thohir.

In today's match, Indonesia only targeted six gold medals from the cycling, kickboxing, triathlon, weightlifting, and rowing branches. However, the medal collection actually exceeded the target.

Overall, Indonesia came to Thailand with a target of getting 80 gold medals to get the third place. So, with the current number, the target has been achieved by 77.5 percent and needs 18 more gold to reach the target.

The ten gold medals today were contributed by triathlon (three), rowing (two), weightlifting (one), chess (one), shooting (one), kickboxing (one), and finally from the athlete obtained by Emilia Nova athlete from the women's heptathlon.
