Owned The Intertoto Trophy, Villarreal Now Owns European Prestigious Trophy

JAKARTA - Villarreal added one trophy to their first prestigious European competition to their collection cabinet after winning the 2020/21 Europa League.

The Yellow Submarine became champions after their debut in the final of a prestigious European competition, having previously only won the Intertoto Cup minor tournament in 2003 and 2004.

Villarreal defeated Manchester United, who are seeded, in the final to be decided on penalties at the Miejski Stadium in Gdansk, Poland, Wednesday local time (Thursday WIB).

This was clearly the longest penalty shootout in the Europa League final, as both teams had to execute until the 11th executioner respectively.

Despite Villarreal's inaugural trophy, this was Unai Emery's fourth time winning the Europa League, having previously won three consecutive seasons with Sevilla in 2014–16. That's UEFA's record.

With this achievement, Villarreal became the fourth Spanish representative to ever win the Europa League or its predecessor competition, the UEFA Cup, after Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, and Valencia.

In the last 10 seasons, Spanish and English teams have dominated the Europa League title. Seven times for Spain represented Atletico, Sevilla, and Villarreal as well as three times for England represented by MU and Chelsea.
