JAKARTA - The European Football Association (UEFA) is beginning the process to take disciplinary action against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus over their efforts to launch the European Super League (ESL), UEFA said on Wednesday, May 26.

ESL itself was formed by 12 clubs and announced last month. But the project collapsed within 48 hours.

Nine other clubs, including six English Premier League teams, backed out of the project and have signed a "Club Commitment Declaration" including a series of reintegration measures.

Now only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus have yet to withdraw from the project.

"Following an investigation conducted by UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Watchdog in connection with the so-called 'Super League' project, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus FC for potential violations of UEFA's legal framework," UEFA said in an official statement quoted by Reuters.

"More information will be notified in due course."

ESL was formed by 12 clubs as founding members, but nine of them - Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid - have stepped down and have struck deals with UEFA.
