JAKARTA - Manchester City defender and England National Team (Timnas), John Stones, revealed that he was considering retiring from football last season after being injured.

The 31-year-old has repeatedly experienced hamstring and leg problems last season which caused him to miss more than 30 games in all competitions.

It was those injuries that left the Stones unmained for the Three Lions under Thomas Tuchel since the German manager started working in January 2026.

"Last season was very difficult for me, to the point where I thought of quitting. I don't want to do it."

"I'm fed up with being professional and trying to do everything, then constantly failing and not having an answer. It's a very difficult situation."

"There are points where you don't know why that is happening. In fact, it's even more difficult when you're working hard, or you're very professional, to be able to play and ready to play."

"When the time comes and something happens, it will be a mental challenge. Hopefully I don't get back into that position," Stones told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Stones made just 11 appearances in the Premier League last season after previously being a starting player on Manchester City's backline.

This season, he has returned to fitness. Stones even have the opportunity to return to England against Wales or Latvia.

The match against Wales on Friday, October 10, 2025, early morning WIB, was a friendly party in preparation for a trip to Latvian headquarters in the 2026 World Cup European Zone Qualifiers on October 15, 2025, early morning WIB.

"My emotions are peaked. I'm not thinking clearly. I think it's deep down in my heart, I'll never do it (retired)."

"I've said years ago when Manchester City wanted me to get a new challenge.

I said that I would fight. That's all I've known since I was little, why should I stop now?"

"So, yes, there is fighting spirit in me and the mentality of winning that doesn't want to stop," said Stones.
