Korea Open 2025: Jonatan Christie Follows Alwi To Quarter Finals

JAKARTA The men's singles badminton player Jonatan Christie managed to secure a ticket to the quarter-finals of the Korea Open 2025 to follow in the footsteps of his junior Alwi Farhan.

Jonathan, who is the fourth seed in the tournament, kept his hopes after winning three games 22-20, 15-21, and 21-15 against Lee Chia Hao of China Taipei on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

After winning the first game which went tight, Jonathan managed to lead the start of the 5-3 second game. However, Lee managed to score eight points for a big lead in the interval and continued to lead after that.

At the beginning of the third game Jonathan came from behind to take the lead, but Lee finally led one point at a break. Jonathan only got up after that to lead 15-11 and be able to defend him.

"In the second game I dropped the tempo of the game a little which made the opponent more comfortable and free to control. I didn't repeat that and I fixed it in crucial points of the deciding game," said Jonatan.

This is Jonathan's second quarter-final in three of his latest tournaments. He previously ran aground at this stage when he appeared in the 2025 BWF World Championships last August.

"Earlier there were several things that didn't really need to be done, but the name of any match could happen," said the owner of the 2018 Asian Games gold medal.

Jonathan will next meet Kenta Nishimoto. The Japanese men's singles reached the quarter-finals of the tournament after beating Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

So far, Jonathan and Kenta have met in competitive events 20 times. Jonathan won 11-9, of which two wins were won this year.

Jonathan and Alwi are the Indonesian men's singles remaining at the Korea Open 2025 from four representatives who penetrated the second half. Besides Ginting, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo also felt defeat.
