2025 BWF World Championships: Jonathan Gets Quarter-Final Tickets

JAKARTA The men's singles Jonatan Christie managed to secure a ticket to the second quarter-finals for Indonesia at the 2025 BWF World Championships (BWF World Championships 2025).

Jonathan stepped foot in the last eight after defeating Lee Cheuk Yiu from Hong Kong in two straight games 21-19 and 21-9 at Adidas Arena, Paris, France, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

"Today there was a little anxiety because from the four tournaments yesterday it was always stopped in the round of 16, (three in the second half, one in the first half, ed.). However, Praise God can get out of that pressure," said Jonathan after the match.

Before reaching the quarter-finals in Paris, the 2018 Asian Games gold medalist ran aground in the last 16 of the Singapore Open, Indonesia Open, and China Open 2025. As for when he played at the Japan Open, he lost in the first round.

The biggest obstacle that the fifth seed has passed is only in the first game. Even though it dominates the set, the distance between points and opponents is always close.

Jonathan started with a 3-1 advantage, but Lee managed to hold him to three points and turned around to the front. The Indonesian men's singles then put up a fight and took a 6-3 lead.

The difference of three points was also maintained by Jonathan during the interval. However, his journey was not smooth, so Lee had identified the scores twice 16-16 and 17-17.

Jonathan then managed to get out of the pressure with three points to get the game point. Lee almost buried Jonathan's victory in this game because he managed to get the score closer to 19-20 before losing.

In the second game, Jonathan's journey was much smoother after Lee equalized the score 3-3. The five points that were successfully announced after that brought Jonathan further away and were not overtaken.

Previously Jonathan, the first ticket to the last eight for Indonesia was secured by the women's singles Kusuma Wardani, who defeated the Japanese representative, Tomoka Miyazaki.

Unfortunately, Jonathan's trip failed to be followed by a mixed doubles of Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu. The pair were eliminated after being beaten by Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei in a rubber game 21-14, 19-21, and 17-21.
