JAKARTA - Chinese football commentator Xu Liang has apologized for his comments that were deemed insulting to Henan Songshan Longmen's club during a match against Chongqing Liangjiang Athletic in the advanced round of the local league competition.
"I have used some profanity in my comments during the match between Chongqing and Henan," Xu was quoted as saying by local media on Tuesday.
On his social media accounts, the man admitted his scathing comments were made due to the on-field situation during the Chinese Super League (CSL) follow-up match on Sunday, May 9.
In addition to Henan's club, his negative comments were also directed at the bosnian defender Toni Sunjic.
"I have long been interested in Henan's club. I was just disappointed with Sunjic's performance, which caused something to hurt Henan's fans. Therefore, I apologize to Sunjic and Henan," Xu wrote.
The apology was delivered after Henan's club management issued a statement regretting Xu's comments.
"In the 68th minute of the match, Xu Liang blatantly insulted our club and called Sunjic an arrogant player. It hurts the club and the fans," a statement from Henan's club was reported by Antara.
In the match, Henan squandered a two-goal lead before finally giving up a 2–3 lead at the hands of Chongqing.
