Failed To Win Despite Winning First, Newcastle Defeated By Arsenal 2-3

JAKARTA Arsenal won a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle United in a pre-season match which was held at the Singapore National Stadium, Sunday, July 27. Five goals were created in this match.

Arsenal turned things around through goals from Mikel Merino, Jacob Murphy's own goal, and Martin Odegaard's penalty. Meanwhile, Newcastle's two goals were scored by Anthony Elanga and Alex Murphy.

Newcastle opened the scoring when the game had only been running for six minutes. Sandro Tonali's bait from the right side was successfully struck by Anthony Elanga in front of goal. Elanga's shot was not hard, but it was enough to outwit goalkeeper David Raya and put Newcastle 1-0 up.

Arsenal did not remain silent. A few minutes later, Mikel Merino's pass was almost converted into a goal by Kai Havertz through a header, but the ball still bounced narrowly over the bar.

Arsenal's pressure finally paid off in the 33rd minute. Kai Havertz provided a backheel pass which was immediately struck by Mikel Merino with a low shot. The ball headed into the bottom corner of the net and was failed to reach Nick Pope. The score changed 1-1.

It didn't take long, two minutes later Arsenal took the lead. This time, Jacob Murphy turned the cross from the left into his own net. The suicide goal brought Arsenal 2-1 up until halftime.

In the second half, Newcastle equalized again in the 58th minute. Jacob Murphy paid for his mistake by firing a low shot from outside the penalty box. David Raya who was not in the ideal position failed to reach the ball. The score becomes 2-2.

Newcastle almost scored the third goal in the 68th minute. William Osula managed to get a cross from the right, but his header was still narrowly wide of Arsenal's goal.

Arsenal again threatened through the action of the young player Max Downman. Coming off the bench, Downman showed an aggressive game and had forced John Ruddy to make a save.

In the 84th minute, Arsenal were awarded a penalty after Downman was brought down by Joelinton in the box. Team captain Martin Odegaard who became the executor carried out his duties perfectly.
