JAKARTA - Britain's third-tier club, Ipswich Town, announced Thursday an agreement with pop singer Ed Sheeran to sponsor the team starting next season.

Sheeran is one of the sons of the Suffolk region and is an Ipswich fan, with several photos of him as a child wearing an Ipswich jersey circulating after the deal.

"This club is a big part of the local community, and this is my way of showing support," said Ed.

"I always enjoy every visit to Portman Road, and I can't wait to get back there when the fans are allowed to enter the stadium again," he said.

The deal will see Sheeran the main sponsor displayed on the front of Ipswich's jersey for next season, although how his logo will be displayed has not been disclosed in detail.

"Everything will be revealed at a later time," said Ed, referring to the logo he will put on the front of the Ipswich jersey next season.

Ipswich is the largest football club in the Suffolk region and has won the FA Cup in 1978 and the UEFA Cup (the predecessor competition for the Europa League) in 1981.

Ipswich was one of the team's inauguration editions of the English Premier League in the 1992/93 season before being relegated in 1995.

Ipswich once again won promotion tickets to the Premier League in 2000 but had to be relegated two years later and in 2019 they had to go down to League One (third caste) where they compete there until now.
