Verstappen Rebut Dramatic Pole At Silverstone, Piastri And Norris Threaten

JAKARTA - Max Verstappen of Red Bull again showed his class by taking pole position dramatically in the final seconds of the British Grand Prix qualifying session, Saturday, July 5 local time, at the Silverstone Circuit, England. His last nearly perfect Lap recorded a time of 1:24,892 seconds, overtaking Oscar Piastri (McLaren) by a difference of only one tenth of a second.

"The weather and wind are quite difficult today. But this is a true circuit you have to be really total and brave," said Verstappen, in the interview session. "We're fast enough on the straight track. This is a big boost for the team, and I'm really looking forward to racing tomorrow."

McLaren himself appeared strong, but their small mistakes had to be paid dearly. Oscar Piastri had led the standings with a time of 1:24,995, but a small mistake at the corner made him widen and failed to sharpen his time record.

"My first lap was amazing, but the final lap was a bit chaotic. To be honest, I left a little time on the track. But we'll never know if that's enough," Piastri said.

His teammate, Lando Norris, secured third position even though he admitted that he was disappointed that he could not lead in the home race.

"This qualification is good, I am not disappointed with the third position. But of course I want to be in front at Silverstone. Max is doing his job very well," said Norris. "Today it is determined by a very small margin."

This qualification leaves a lot of frustration for the top riders. Norris, Piastri, Hamilton, and Leclerc all made a small mistake on the final decisive lap. Lewis Hamilton, who recorded a little faster time than Norris, had to settle for fourth.

Charles Leclerc and George Russell followed in fifth and sixth positions. Russell had moved up to second, but Verstappen immediately overtook him in the final second.
