Liverpool's Bad Week, Knocked Out Of Two Cups At The Same Time

JAKARTA - Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, dismissed the notion that Newcastle United players were "hunger" in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, March 16, 2025.

The Premier League leader was beaten 1-2 in the final match at Wembley, with Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scoring for Newcastle before substitute Federico Chiesa narrowed the gap in injury time.

Eddie Howe's team survived the threat at the end of the game to give Newcastle's first domestic trophy in 70 years.

However, Arne Slot does not believe the prospect gives his opponent more motivation.

"It's probably been 70 years since they won trophies the last time, but that's for fans."

"The players only have 15 years to play football. They want to win every trophy they fight for. That's also what we want."

"It was a game that went as desired (Newcastle). They got extra energy with goals before halftime, which they probably deserved after the first 45 minutes."

"The thing is, they are more threatening than we threaten them. I don't think they are more hungry for victory," Arne Slot said after the game.

It was a disappointing week for Liverpool to be knocked out of the Champions League on penalties against Paris Saint-Germain in the middle of last week.

Arne Slot described his squad's performance with one word, disappointing.

"Disappointing results. Disappointing performances. It's completely different from what I felt after PSG's game."

"Losing twice in a row is something I think is the first time we've experienced it."

"However, that may also happen when entering the final round of the tournament. PSG and Newcastle are two very good teams, both have their own style of play."

"We already know from the match at St James' Park how difficult it is to beat (Newcastle)."

"It was a tough week, but it was also a week when we widened the lead to 12 points so not all were negative. However, the last two games obviously wasn't what we wanted," said Arne Slot.

Liverpool have now 17 days before their next game against Everton on April 2, 2025, when they look forward to returning to winning ways in pursuing the Premier League title.

"I'd love to play next week, but now the situation is that they will go to their national team where they have to play two more games."

"Then, it was only a week before we faced Everton, who once again was the team we had faced. We know how difficult it was," said Arne Slot.
