The 2024 Chelsea Squad Is The Most Expensive Of All Time

JAKARTA - Chelsea's squad at the end of the 2024 financial year is the most expensive of all time in terms of transfer fees according to the European Club Finance and Investment Landscape annual report assigned by UEFA.

The publication analyzed all Europe's top leagues through detailed submissions and reviews. The findings clearly illustrate the scale of cost expenditures and revenues of Premier League clubs.

The study found that English club transfer spending increased by 17 percent to reach a record 2.1 billion euros in 2023. Of the 20 most expensive squads in the world, nine came from the Premier League.

The list is led by Chelsea, who since being taken over by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in the summer of 2022 have recruited 41 players in six transfer windows.

The report found that their squad at the end of the 2024 club's financial year was officially the most expensive ever, with a combined transfer fee of 1.656 billion euros.

This amount easily exceeds the value of the Manchester United squad in 2023, which cost 1.422 billion euros.

The figures audited from the club's financial statements show that in the five-year period from July 2019 to June 2024, the Blues' spending far surpassed other European club spending.

They spent/invested less than 2 billion euros in transfer fees during that period, two-thirds more than the next-highest club, such as Manchester City (1,175 billion euros) and Arsenal (1,145 billion euros), and much more than Barcelona (733 million euros) or Liverpool (657 million euros).

Chelsea's big spending under Boehly-Clearlake has not paid off on the pitch. The club failed to qualify for the Champions League or won a single trophy under its leadership.

Ahead of the match against Southampton at Stamford Bridge on February 26, 2025, a group of Chelsea supporters protested the way the club was running.

However, it turns out that the Blues proved out of three consecutive defeats in all competitions by sweeping three games with wins.

They crushed Southampton 4-0, rolled FC Copenhagen 2-1 at the UEFA Conference League, and beat Leicester City 1-0 on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Chelsea are now in fourth place in the Premier League standings with a collection of 49 points. Their performance this season in the league was quite surprising because they had stuck to Liverpool at the top of the standings.

Seeing that performance, there is a big chance for the Blues to secure tickets to the Champions League next season.
