Klopp Rejects European Super League: It's Basically About Money, Nothing Else

JAKARTA - Jurgen Klopp stressed his stance regarding the European Super League has not changed since he rejected it in 2019. He said it wasn't just a league game and was basically a question of money.

Klopp reminded that the emergence of new competitions was not the case yesterday afternoon in football, such as the expansion of the Club World Cup by FIFA, the Conference League by UEFA, and the planned new format of the Champions League which is expected to be the responsibility of UEFA for the European Super League discourse.

"It has not changed, my feelings have not changed, my opinion has not changed. Of course, I just heard about this yesterday and I was preoccupied with preparing for a difficult match against Leeds", he told Sky Sports as quoted by Antara in an interview ahead of the start of football.

"FIFA wants the Club World Cup, whenever it is. Basically, it's a question of money, nothing else. It happens, not just a league match", he continued.

Liverpool has officially announced their participation in the European Super League initiative with five other English teams as well as six other big European clubs such as Real Madrid, whose president Florentino Perez has been appointed as Chairman of the European Super League.

"It's a heavy blow. Naturally, a lot of people are angry. But I can't say anything more than this, we weren't involved in the process, I didn't, the players weren't, and now that the statement is out we will see how things will develop", Klopp said at length.

Klopp hopes that supporters do not direct their anger regarding the European Super League towards Liverpool players, as well as other clubs who claim to be the initiators of the midweek competition against the Champions League.

"The players have not done anything wrong except trying to win the football match. I want everyone to know that", he added.
