SBY Criticizes Player's Salary Inequality In Proliga

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has criticized the inequality of salaries of foreign and local players in Proliga (Instagram/@lavani.forever).

JAKARTA Former President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) criticized the inequality of salaries between foreign and local players in the Proliga competition.

SBY in his long tweet on social media X (previously known as Twitter) highlighted a number of things ahead of the start of Proliga 2025. One of the things he put forward was about the player's salary.

The sixth President of Indonesia said that the player's salary gap was the homework of the Indonesian Volleyball Association (PBVSI) which needed to be resolved immediately.

"I suggest that PBVSI think about the salary cap or the maximum salary limit for foreign players," read a tweet from SBY which was written last weekend.

He argues that the difference between the salaries of foreign players and local players should not be large. The reason is, local players also have achievements that are no less flashy with foreign players.

In addition, SBY suspects that the increase in the salary of foreign athletes who are not limited is the cause of demotivation among volleyball clubs in the country.

They felt they could no longer compete, resulting in a decline in Proliga participants, especially in the men's team category which shrank to only five teams.

"Not all clubs have high financing skills. Clubs formed by certain SOEs must have a budget limit that can be issued," said SBY.

The Indonesia highest level volleyball league competition will take place from January 3, 2025 to May 11, 2025. It is planned that this event will be held in nine major cities of Indonesia.

In the 2025 season, a total of 12 participants will participate, consisting of seven women's teams and five men's teams. This number has decreased compared to last season.

The number of women's teams was the same as last season, but the men's team lost Kudus Sukun Badak and Jakarta BIN. From the women's team, Jakarta BIN was also confirmed to be absent in the 2025 edition.

The team, which was strengthened by Megawati Hanggetri Pertiwi last season, has the status of defending champion Proliga, but has not continued the contract. Their position was replaced by Yogya Falcons.
