JAKARTA A controversial decision from the referee in a football match in Guinea sparked clashes between supporters and killed 56 people.

The incident occurred in a stadium located in Nzerekore, the country's second-largest city. According to government information, protests over dissatisfaction with the referee's decision led to stone-throwing action from supporters.

The incident then caused panic and a fight in a crowded stadium. Supporters then fight for a way out so that chaos is unavoidable.

In a video published by Reuters, dozens of people are scrambling to jump over high walls to save themselves.

"Hospital services have recorded a temporary death toll of 56 people," the government said in a statement quoted by Al Jazeera.

The football match is the final of the tournament in honor of Guinea's military leader, Mamady Doumbouya, who rose to power after leading the coup in 2021.

A government official who opened his voice on condition of anonymity said that many of the victims were minors who were caught in chaos after police started firing tear gas.

The statement was confirmed via video and images circulating. One of them more than a dozen immovable bodies was seen lying on the ground, some of whom were children.

The opposition group of the National Alliance for Change and Democracy said the authorities assumed responsibility for organizing this tournament.

They considered the event to increase political support for Doumbouya to be against the charter of transition before the promised presidential election.

However, so far there has been no immediate response from the military junta on the charges.

Guinea's Prime Minister, Bah Oury, condemned the violence in a statement posted on X's social media.

He said the government would issue a release after gathering all the information.
