Contrasting Statistics of Madura United and Persebaya Surabaya

JAKARTA – Madura United has statistics that are in stark contrast to Persebaya Surabaya, the team they will host in the 12th week of the 2024/2025 Indonesian League 1 season.

The currently slumping Laskar Sape Kerrab will act as hosts to welcome Bajul Ijo at the Gelora Bangkalan Stadium, East Java, on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 19.00 WIB.

Persebaya coach Paul Munster said that the two teams' disparate statistics could not be used as a benchmark for this match. He emphasized that as the away team, they should be vigilant.

"Any team, top or bottom, all matches are difficult in this league. If we start to underestimate them, that's when it will be a problem," he said, quoted from the club's website.

On paper, Persebaya looks to have a great chance of securing three points. Two weeks before this duel, the team was recorded as having defeated PSIS Semarang and Persija Jakarta.

On the other hand, Madura United has had a disappointing start to the season with a series of results. They have only won once out of 11 matches so they have not been able to get out of the relegation zone.

In their two most recent matches they did not even get any points at all. They lost to Persija Jakarta and Arema FC in succession.

Munster said that Madura United remains scary even though the results they have obtained so far still show otherwise.

"We cannot underestimate the opposing team. I watched them when they played against Persib [Bandung]. They drew with Persib and had a big chance to win," he explained.

Persebaya Surabaya came to Madura United's home ground carrying the status as the top of the standings. On the other hand, the host is still struggling to get out of the slump in 17th position in the standings.

In addition to being the top of the standings, Persebaya also has Malik Risaldi and Francisco Rivera. These two players last season were the key that helped Madura penetrate the Championship Series.

When defending Madura last season, Rivera recorded 36 appearances with nine goals and 11 assists, while Malik 12 goals and four assists from 36 appearances.
