Iga Swiatek Diskors One Month Due To Doping

JAKARTA The world number two and the five-time Grand Slam champion, Iga Swiatek, tested positive for using a banned substance so they had to undergo a suspension for one month.

The 23-year-old defending champion of the French Open tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ) in samples outside the competition in August 2024 when he was still the world's number one tennis player.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) accepts that this is due to contamination of melatonin drugs without recipes produced and sold in Poland. The drug is consumed by Swiatek to deal with jet lags and sleeping problems.

Therefore, Swiatek's error rate is considered to be at the lowest end of the range, aka no significant error or negligence, so he also served a brief sentence.

"In the last two and a half months, I've had a rigorous ITIA process and confirmed that I'm innocent," Swiatek said on his Instagram account.

Swiatek has been temporarily suspended since 12 September 2024 before he filed an appeal. At that time, he had to miss three tournaments.

The Polish tennis player appealed the temporary suspension on September 22, 2024, informing an independent court that a positive test source was identified as a contaminated drug produced in his home country.

ITIA then offered sanctions for one month after testing confirmed the Swiatek account.

"I admit this situation has hit me very hard because throughout my life, I'm trying hard to have a career that can be an example for future generations," said Swiatek.

In addition to winning the fourth French Open in his career, Swiatek also won titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Madrid, and Roma in the 2024 season.

He was absent at the Korea Open (16-22 September), the China Open (25 September-6 October), and the Wuhan Open (7-13 October/he was suspended during the registration deadline).
