The Appointment Of Thomas Tuchel And The UK Coach Crisis

JAKARTA - The English Football Federation (FA) has just appointed Thomas Tuchel to lead the England national team after Gareth Southgate's resignation.

The inauguration of the 51-year-old coach was carried out in mid-October 2024. He only officially started duty on January 1, 2025.

Tuchel's presence on the one hand is a breath of fresh air considering the Three Lions need quality trainers who have slick flying hours.

Thomas Tuchel has led several major European clubs, from Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, to Bayern Munich.

He won many titles when he was in charge of these elite European clubs.

No wonder, the FA hopes that Thomas Tuchel can bring similar success for the England national team, which has been fasting for the title of major tournament since the last 1966.

There is only one trophy that England has won during their participation in the World Cup and Euro. The only title is the 1966 World Cup.

The rest, England always go home empty-handed. At most, the Three Lions became runners-up in two consecutive Euro editions, 2020 and 2024.

However, the arrival of Thomas Tuchel actually also opened his wounds, aka the old fact that England has always been in a quality coaching crisis.

Southgate did not give birth to titles. He is also only in the same class as a manager who has managed Middlesbrough (2006-2009) and England U-21 (2013-2016) before promoting to the senior team.

Lee Carsley, who is currently carrying out the duties of interim manager after Southgate's departure after Euro 2024, admits this.

In fact, after leading Jude Bellingham and colleagues in several matches, he realized that his quality was not capable enough to handle the England national team.

Lee Carsley, who is also originally British, does not have a classy profile like Tuchel. He is also in the same class as a manager who has held Coventry City as a caretaker only, then Brentford, Birmingham City (caretaker), as well as English age groups, U-20 and U-21.

Carsley agreed on the crisis. England failed to produce quality coaches despite the country's leading Premier League and academy.

He considered that if they wanted the original England coach to win the Three Lions, they should have a classy portfolio with top European clubs.

"I talk a lot about players in our system who get the chance."

"I think we really have players on our path who are able to play in senior teams. I think the same ( SHOULD) apply to the coaches."

"In the end, we need the opportunity. We need more coaches from England in the Premier League, in the Championship, who are given the opportunity to show what they can do."

"I think the higher the level we can train in the Premier League, the Champions League, getting that kind of experience, the more useful it is for games in general."

"However, we have to get that position. I think with coaching courses and the experience provided by St. George's Park (the England national team training camp), I think we are heading in the right direction."

"However, in the end the coach needed that opportunity," said Carsley.

Thomas Tuchel will be the second foreign manager to lead the England national team after Sweden coach! Eriksson, during his five-year term from 2001 to 2006.

Since its founding in 1992, no British manager has ever won the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Sir Bobby Robson is the last England manager to win a European trophy. He led Barcelona to the European Cup Winners in 1997.

Apart from that, Carsley will leave his position as interim coach to Thomas Tuchel who is permanently contracted.

Carsley will lead his last two matches with the England national team in the UEFA Nations League against Greece (15 November 2024) and the Republic of Ireland (18 November 2024).

The 50-year-old coach has now agreed with Tuchel's appointment who has a slick profile. The German manager was deemed worthy of being in control of the Three Lions.

"My focus is always on the game. I am respected for being allowed (by Tuchel) to continue work (in the remaining two games this year)."

"I think people realize how difficult work is without worrying too much about outside influences."

"But no, I really feel comfortable with this position. I think this is a very good appointment."

"We're talking about having a coach who has a valid track record. Thomas really has it, (he's) a coach I really want to see his job."

"Hopefully, handing over a group of strong players with real potential, (he can bring) to advance and win big tournaments," Carsley said again.

Carsley will return to lead England's U-21 England after Tuchel is on duty.
