PBSI Submits Amendment Of Scoring System To BWF From 3X21 To 5X11 Format

JAKARTA - The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) together with the Badminton Federation of Maldives have officially submitted a proposal to change the badminton match scoring system to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), from 3X21 to 5X11 format.

Actually, the discourse on changing the scoring system was rolled out by BWF at the 2018 Annual General Meeting but was rejected by the majority of meeting participants, including Indonesia.

"During the 2018 voting, we indeed rejected the discourse of changing the score, because at that time BWF wanted to change the format as quickly as possible. There were only three or four trials in small tournaments, then they were immediately implemented. Meanwhile, at that time the 2020 Olympics qualifications will begin," said the Head of International Relation Division of PBSI, Bambang Roedyanto in a release in Jakarta, Sunday.

If at that time they immediately used the new format, the players would not have had much time to adapt. In addition, BWF also proposed that there should be no coach accompanying the match, which immediately received a strong rejection from Indonesia.

Rudy revealed that changes in scoring arrangements will have a positive impact on the progress of badminton. Not only for the players but for all parties involved in it.

"At that time there was a refusal and wanted to be discussed again after the Olympics. Then we held a meeting with the board and coach, it turned out that the 5X11 score format would be suitable for badminton in the future. As players do not only rely on stamina, the duration of the match can be reduced to a shorter and the match is ensured to be exciting from the start, "said Rudy.

"China Badminton has also tried in their national championships in November 2020 and the statistics are quite good," he added.

Therefore, Indonesia re-proposes the discourse of changing the 5X11 score to replace the 3X21 format. The plan is to start in January 2022 and trial for one year at all tournament levels.

Later, this amendment proposal will be brought to the agenda of the BWF Annual Meeting on May 21, 2021, for discussion. The mechanism for making decisions is through the voting of BWF members.
