New Format Liga 2 2024/2025, 9 Relegated Clubs

Liga 2 2024/2025 applies a new format (doc. PSSI).

JAKARTA - Liga 2 2024/2025 competition will start on September 7, 2024. Ferry Paulus as President Director (Managing Director) of PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) revealed the format to be used in this second level competition.

At the launch of Liga 2 2024/2025, Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in Central Jakarta, Ferry Paulus said that the format used this season was certain to be different from last season.

This season, the competition will be attended by 26 clubs divided into three groups. Group A and B contain nine teams, while Group C is filled with eight teams. Later, the eight best teams from this phase will advance to the next round.

In detail, the top three teams in Group A and B as well as the top two teams in Group C from the results of a double round robin that will advance to the last eight. The rest, 18 teams will appear in the round of 18.

In the last eight, participants will be divided into two groups each group contains four teams. The best teams for each group will go to the final and second place will be the promotion playoffs to fight for one remaining slot.

While the round of 18 is part of the relegation competition. A total of 18 of these teams will be divided into three groups with the composition of each group of six teams.

The team that will be relegated to League 3 next season are the three bottom-ranked teams. In other words, the number of teams that will stay in League 2 next season is 14 teams.

"Initially, the format was immediately promoted by three in groups and the relegation was nine. Indeed, after we considered, the number of matches was less," said Ferry Paulus, quoted on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.

"So, we will have two groups, the top eight groups, while the bottom 18 groups are bigger. Well, the top eight are more competitive because later each group winner will qualify for League 1," he said.

The former President of Persija said that starting from the 2025/2026 season, the number of League 2 contestants was 20 teams. In detail, three relegation teams from Liga 1 2024/2025, three promotion teams from Liga 3 2024/2025, and 14 League 2 teams survived.
