2024 Olympics: Gregoria's Opportunity To Revenge On Intanon

Gregoria Mariska Tunjung had the opportunity to take revenge on Ratchanok Intanon in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Olympics (doc. PBSI).

JAKARTA The women's singles Gregoria Mariska Tunjung had the opportunity to take revenge on Ratchanok Intanon when the two of them met in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Gregoria reached the last eight after stopping South Korean representative Kim Ga-eun in a dramatic match of three games 21-4, 8-21, and 23-21 at the Adidas Arena, on Thursday, August 1, 2024, WIB night.

This Wonogiri athlete is the only Indonesian representative from the remaining badminton sport (sports) in France. So, the hope of a medal from the sport is now only on his shoulders.

"It's definitely a relief to be able to win this tiring game. For me, it's quite a burden with the current situation I live alone," said Gregoria after the match.

To be safe to bring home a medal, Gregoria's journey must reach the final. However, getting to that stage is certainly not easy.

He will meet Intanon first in the quarter-finals. The Thai representative will be the next test for the 2017 junior world champion. On paper, Gregoria is clearly not seeded.

This year's Paris meeting will be their 10th clash. In the previous nine clashes, Gregoria was recorded as only securing one victory.

One of the defeats to that number was suffered by Gregoria when they met in the last 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. So, this clash could be used by Gregoria to defend his defeat.

"Already in the quarter-finals, but I want more. I will do everything I can," said the 24-year-old athlete.

Indonesia actually has six representatives from badminton who qualified for Paris this year, but the other five have already lifted their suitcases earlier. Four of them ran aground in the group round, while the other one in the quarter-finals.

The representatives who died in the group were Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Jonatan Christie, Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, and Apriyani Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti. Meanwhile, those who stopped in the top eight were Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
