JAKARTA - The 2023 Asian Cup has reached the final round which will be held at the Lusail Stadium on February 10, 2024. Jordan and Qatar will fight for the trophy.
Apart from the final party which certainly attracted attention, the technology used in the 2023 Asian Cup also deserves attention.
VAR And SAOT
For the first time in tournament history, the video assistant referee (VAR) system has been implemented throughout the 2023 Asian Cup matches. In addition, it is equipped with a semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) system in every match.
Piala Asia 2023 menjadikan AFC sebagai konfederasi pertama di dunia sepak bola yang menerapkan sistem tersebut di level tim nasional putra kontinental.
Every time a VAR review of an offside decision is important during the match. 3D virtual graphs are displayed on the giant screen inside the stadium as well as live broadcasts after the inspection is complete. Until the semifinals end, such a graph has been displayed about 40 times. Both VAR and SAOT systems have functioned smoothly during the tournament to date. This further underscores AFC's commitment to improving accuracy and integrity of decision-making by matchmaking devices.

Play Tablet And Tactical Camera
The AFC has provided a tablet replay on each team bench for tactical and technical analysis. This was done in order to improve the team's match analysis.
Each tablet has access to eight different camera angles, including a specific manned tactical camera, which can be used to view replays.
The device's operation is not a hassle with interface graphics and simple workflows. Users can quickly get used to the system.
The running system with a three-second delay that allows users to have the option to revisit any incident in the game on the playback device as soon as the incident occurs in real time.
The AFC Medical Officer Medical Tablet in the tournament has been given a medical tablet on the side of the field. The tablet presents all available live broadcasts simultaneously to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of injury identification.
This allows AFC doctors to review the actual injury mechanism and communicate important information about any medical situation to their respective teams after reviewing the incident on the tablet. Medical Control & Doping AFC officer, Dr. Ahmed I. Andijiani and Dr. Fenton Arnold Joseph Desouza, described the tablet as an important tool for the AFC team of doctors in terms of making better assessments and injury decisions.
"Medical cables have been a breakthrough in handling concussions and other injuries. They empower faster and more precise decision-making on players, prioritize safety, and prevent long-term problems."
"In addition, real-time communication through tablets fosters smooth collaboration in medical teams, coaches, and referees. Thus, resulting in faster intervention and more coordinated treatment."
"This technology has the potential to revolutionize sports medicine by significantly improving player safety and medical care," said Andijiani.
"The safety of the players is most important. We have to protect them from medical complications."
"I've used this tablet before in some competitions. This technology should be available as part of the role of medics in the upcoming tournament," Desouza added.
EPTSELECTronic Performance & Tracking Systems (EPTS) was introduced in the 2023 Asian Cup. Various player physical data points can be captured, such as total distance, running speed, highest speed, and number of sprints.
EPTS is capable of processing data from these sources to accurately triangulate player positions with the involvement of 12 4K tracking cameras in nine world-class match stadiums, equipped with additional broadcast cameras.
All data was shared with the team within 12 hours after the match was finished via the customized data platform.
Utilization of the latest technology in the 2023 Asian Cup certainly makes the referee's decision more accurate.
However, the next question arises regarding the Indonesian vs Iraq national team in the group stage which has drawn controversy. The latest technologies seem unclear in their function.
Iraq's second goal, which sparked protests because it smelled offside, did not find a bright spot until now. In fact, the Indonesian national team officials sent an official protest letter to the AFC. However, until now it is not clear how the AFC responded.
