Malaysia Open 2024: Gregoria's Efforts To The Final Will Be Heavy

Indonesian women's singles Gregoria Mariska Tunjung will appear at the Malaysia Open 2024 (doc. PBSI).

JAKARTA The women's singles badminton effort, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, will reach the final round of the Malaysia Open 2024 which starting tomorrow will be tough.

The competition, which is leveled as Super 1000 BWF, started on January 9-14, 2024 at Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Gregoria is one of two Indonesian women's singles who participated in this event.

From the draw, Gregoria was the seventh seed. He is in the bottom half of the chart along with three other seeded, namely the Chinese duo Chen Yufei (2) and He Bing Jiao (6) as well as the single Chinese Taipei, Tai Tzu Ying (4).

In the first half, Gregoria will face the Japanese women's singles, Natik Nidaira. This will be the second competitive meeting for the two names.

Previously they had clashed in the 2016 SCG Badminton Asia Junior Championships. At that time, Gregoria successfully came out victorious after the fierce rubber game.

If they make it through the first and second half, Gregoria has a great chance of meeting Chen Yufei in the quarter-finals. This will be a serious challenge for Gregoria.

On paper, Gregoria and Chen Yufei have faced 10 times. Of that number, the Chinese representatives led the 7-3 win-loss record.

However, Gregoria won the final clash in the Kumamoto Masters Japan final in November 2023. At that time, the Wonogiri-born athlete won two straight games to seal his career's first Super 500 title.

If he was able to penetrate the semifinals, Gregoria would have a great chance of meeting Tai Tzu Ying or He Bing Jiao. In head-to-head terms, Gregoria again lost to both names.

With He Bing Jiao, Gregoria has recorded clashes six times. Of these, the 2017 junior world champion won twice and the rest he had to admit the opponent's advantage.

Meanwhile, the record meeting with Tai Tzu Ying was much worse, which was a total of nine clashes. Gregoria has never won. That includes the latest defeat in the group stage of the BWF World Tour Finals 2023.

Apart from Gregoria, Indonesia also sent Putri Kusuma Wardani to this event. In the first round of Putri met the eighth seed in China, Han Yue. He also has a chance to meet An Se-young if he can step into the quarter-finals.
