Expensive Price, AS Roma Cancels Recruit Of Former Juventus Defender Leonardo Bonucci

JAKARTA - AS Roma canceled signing former Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci who currently plays at Union Berlin. Roma chose to buy players on a permanent contract rather than sign defenders for a short period of time.

Roma are actually looking for a centre-back after experiencing a crisis with the absence of Chris Smalling.

Bonucci, who currently plays in Germany's Bundesliga, has been targeted by Roma to be a short solution in the central defender sector. His agent, Alessandro Lucci, has also met with the sporting director of club Tiago Pinto.

Both sides agreed that Roma would recruit Bonucci until the end of the season. The contract value is 800 thousand euros ending in June 2024.

Only the agreement that had been reached was canceled. According to the Friedkin family's Corriere dello Sport, which owns the club, canceled the decision. The reason is, the investment is considered too expensive for players aged 37.

If including taxes to be paid to recruit Bonucci, the club will spend around 2 million euros. Meanwhile, the club only used the services of the former Italian national team defender for six months.

Roma itself tightens the budget for purchasing players. The club also prefers to buy players with long-term contracts over short ones.

Bonucci himself was released by Juve even though the player wanted to stay until he retired.

But Bonucci finally had to leave Juve and move to Germany to join Union Berlin. He has played seven times and scored one goal.
