Tragically, Bayern Kicked Out Holstein Kiel's 2nd Division 2 Club From The German Cup

JAKARTA - Defending champions Bayern Munich were eliminated by second division club Holstein Kiel from the German Cup after losing 5-6 on penalties in the second round match of this tournament which was played at the Holstein Stadium, Kiel, Wednesday local time or Thursday morning WIB.

Bayern squandered the advantage twice. They took the lead through Serge Gnabry's goal in the 14th minute, then Fin Bartels equalized in the 37th minute. Leroy Sane restored Bayern's lead in the 48th minute, before Hauke Wahl's goal brought it back to a level draw in the 90th minute, Antara noted on the DFB's official website.

Both teams converted all of the penalties before Bayern's Marc Roca failed to do his job and Bartels managed to hit the ball into the Bayern goal.

The Bavarian side opened the scoring through Gnabry in the early stages of the match and Thomas Mueller had the chance to double Bayern's lead when his close-range shot bounced over the bar.

"We lost to a team that was not underdog Kiel and they did their best," Mueller said as quoted by Antara from Reuters. "We had a number of chances in the first half. But we made some mistakes and Kiel punished us."

"They were very efficient but we should have won the game. We were kicked out and it was bitter. It's hard to say we didn't invest everything. It's positive but being left out is frustrating."

Bayern's defense has been fragile throughout the season, conceding the most goals conceded after 15 league games since 1981. Kiel also took advantage of that fragility to score a return as Bartels beat defender Niklas Suele in a sprint battle to then score.

Despite making five changes to players from a team that squandered a two-goal lead to go down 2-3 at Borussia Moenchengladbach in the German league on Saturday, coach Hansi Flick has yet to find a solid formation at the back.

Bayern took the lead again with Sane's free-kicks, but they also gave the hosts some good chances.

The Bavarian side had a good chance with a Jamal Musiala strike against the crossbar, before the hosts hit back with a Hauke Wahl header to send the game to extra time.

Kiel, who next faces Darmstadt 98, has kept his cool to knock out Bayern at this early stage of the German Cup for the first time since 2000.

"We believe that we were able to deliver a big surprise here tonight. We said we were going to put in all the penalties and we did it. But overall I think it adorned our good performance and we deserved it," said Bartels.
