JAKARTA The Belgian national team has officially appointed Domenico Tedesco as their new coach. The coach will occupy the position previously occupied by Roberto Martinez.

The 37-year-old coach, who was born in Italy, but also has German citizenship, has signed a contract until next year's European Cup.

"It is a great honor to be the new Belgian head coach. I am looking forward to this task and I am very motivated. I have had a very good feeling since the first conversation," he said.

Former coach Schalke, Spartak Moscow, and RB Leipzig, will debut as Belgium's national team coach in the European Cup qualifiers against Sweden in Stockholm on March 24.

Some of the previous names have been linked to the position of coach of the Belgian national team since Martinez resigned. He ended six years of togetherness with Belgium after being eliminated from the group stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, and Thomas Tuchel are the names who were seeded to continue Martinez's relay, who resigned after the draw against Croatia.

Under Martinez's tutelage, the Red Devils headed for Qatar's 2022 World Cup as the world's second-ranked team. However, he was eliminated in the group stage after winning only one in three games and scoring just one goal.

Tedesco started his career with the lower division team in Germany. He then started coaching at the age of 31 with youth teams Stuttgart and Hoffenheim.

In the first season, he immediately brought Schalkc to finish second in the Bundesliga. However, he was sacked in March 2019 after seven games without a win, including a 0-7 defeat against Manchester City in the European Champions League.

After that, he spent two years at Spartak Moscow before joining RB Leipzig in December 2021. Under his care, Leipzig won the German Cup and reached the semifinals of the Europa League last season.

However, Tedesco was fired again last September after a bad start to the 2022/2023 season. He was later unemployed before being announced as Belgian tactician.
