JAKARTA - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer believes Edinson Cavani still has the ability to become a top striker. For that, he wants to extend the Uruguayan's tenure at Old Trafford.

The 33-year-old forward signed a one-year contract in September after months without a club since leaving Paris St Germain (PSG).

United have the option of extending Cavani's contract for the following season, and Solksjaer hopes the club will make it happen.

"At the moment he looks like he has a few years left in him, so I can't say anything else," said Solksjaer when asked if Cavani would stay next season.

"He has had a great influence, and has had a great impact since he came here," he added.

Cavani has scored four goals in 13 appearances for the Red Devils, and came on as a substitute to provide the assist which led to Bruno Fernandes' goal as United drew 2-2 at Leicester City last Saturday.

However, Solksjaer dismissed suggestions that Cavani's role would be more emphasized as a substitute.

"He is definitely a starting player. You cannot classify the qualities of a player like him as the others. He will probably be a core player more than when he was not a starting player," said the Norwegian.

Cavani will be available when United host Wolverhampton on Tuesday, but he could be sidelined again after being charged by the FA for writing on social media.

After scoring twice as United came from 0-2 down to beat Southampton 3-2 last month, Cavani thanked his Instagram colleague using the Spanish word "negrito," which means little black person.

Both United and the player at the time said that the word was used with a joke meaning and had different connotations in South America.

United have not beaten Wolverhampton in four meetings since the team returned to the top flight two and a half years ago.

But Solksjaer hopes his side's struggles to find the home win they suffered at the start of the season have ended, after they won 6-2 over Leeds United in the final game at Old Trafford.

"We are clearly developing, we are getting better at finding solutions for different matches. But we know Wolverhampton have good quality and they will give problems if we are too open," he concluded.
