FIFA Confirms A Migrant Worker Dies In Qatar's 2022 World Cup

JAKARTA - The parent international football (FIFA) released a statement confirming the death of a migrant worker during Qatar's 2022 World Cup. The first report regarding the killed migrant worker was first released by The Athletic on Wednesday.

The worker is said to have breathed his last due to a forklift truck accident during the tournament which was still in the preliminary round.

The unnamed victim came from the Philippines. He fell to death at the resort where the Saudi Arabian team was staying while trying to make repairs.

"FIFA is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our sympathy and sympathy with the workers' families," said a FIFA statement quoted from 90min on Thursday, December 8, 2022.

According to The Athletic, workers who lost their lives did not wear safety ropes while making repairs. He was also only accompanied by one other worker when the unfortunate incident happened to him.

The Qatari government is currently investigating the death. An official has stated that the company will be subject to severe legal action and financial sanctions if found in fact there was negligence related to safety protocols.

"FIFA will be in a position to comment further after the relevant process with respect to the death of the worker has been completed," FIFA said.

This is the death of the latest migrant worker in Qatar linked to the World Cup. However, the total death toll related to the tournament has so far not been officially confirmed.

Several reports say the death toll reaches thousands. However, Qatari government authorities on many occasions denied this information and said that so far there have been only three deaths related to infrastructure development in this four-year event.
