Pele Participating Inaras About The Tragedy Of The Kanjuruhan Stadium: Violence Has No Place In Sports

JAKARTA - World football legend Pele also highlighted the tragedy of the Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, which claimed hundreds of lives. Pele criticized the incident.

The former Brazilian national team player said that violence has no place whatsoever in the world of sport.

Pele called the incident at the Kanjuruhan Stadium a big disaster in the football world. Moreover, in that incident there were 32 children who were also victims.

"Ekan ini, kita menyaksikan salah satu bencana terbesar dalam sejarah sepak bola. Ada 32 anak-anak dari 125 orang yang meninggal dunia. Kekerasan tak punya tempat dalam olahraga," kata Pele dalam sebuah unggahan melalui media sosialnya dikutip dari Antara.

The legend added that disappointment over the defeat of his favorite team could not be a justification for committing violence. Instead, sport is considered Pele to be a place to spread love for each other.

"There is no disappointment from the defeat that can justify we lose love for our fellow human beings. Sports should be a form of love," he added.

The tragedy of the Kanjuruhan Stadium broke out after the Arema FC vs Persebaya Surabaya match on Saturday, October 1 night WIB. The clash between Arema supporters as the host and security forces was unavoidable. The tear gas was fired to break the crowd into disaster that claimed hundreds of lives.

In the aftermath of this incident, PSSI as the country's football federation temporarily suspended the 2022/2023 Liga 1 competition. Arema FC was also sentenced by the Disciplinary Committee (Komdis PSSI) in the form of a ban on holding matches in Malang and a fine of Rp250 million due to the tragedy.
