JAKARTA - The Badminton International Federation (BWF) confirmed that two tournaments in China in 2022 were canceled even though the BWF World Tour Finals continued in the country.
The two tournaments in question are the Victor China Open 2022 (Super 1000) in October and Fuzhou 2022 (Super 750) in November.
"Unfortunately, it is impossible to continue planning to hold two tournaments in Changzhou and Fuzhou," BWF Secretary-General Thomas Lund said.
Although the two important tournaments were canceled, China will continue to hold the Tour Finals which will take place on December 14-18. This is the first time China has hosted a badminton event since 2019.
"Fokus is now turning to the rest of the BWF World Tour and BWF Tour tournaments with big points on offer over the coming weeks," Lund said.
"BWF World Tour Finals is one of our most profitable tournaments of the year and we are pleased to partner with the China Badminton Association, the Guangzhou City Government to bring the Final back to Guangzhou," he continued.
Guangzhou has held two BWF World Tour Finals editions in 2018 and 2019. For this reason, Lund hopes that this year's event can again provide a big show for badminton fans.
"We also thank the Chinese government for conveying its invitation to the world's top badminton players and we remain confident that the hosts will provide a spectacular Final event with the highest level of safety and comfort for players," he said.
The list of athletes who qualify for the Tour Finals will be confirmed on November 22 following the closure of the Australian Open 2022 which will take place from November 15-20.
