JAKARTA - Gennady Golovkin is looking forward to his big fight with Canelo Alvarez and believes a win will be the highlight of his career.
Kazakh fighter nicknamed GGG (Triple G) put on weight to take on Mexican legend Canelo for a challenge. The two fighters will duel at 168 pounds - a first for Golovkin who is used to fighting at 160 pounds.
"This will be the biggest win of my career. It will be the best thing to happen. It will be very satisfying," Golovkin told the Las Vegas Review Journal quoted by Marca, Wednesday.
Golovkin failed to beat Canelo on the previous two occasions. The first meeting in 2017 ended in a draw. The second one a year later was won controversially by Canelo. Back then, they were fighting at 160 pounds.
"A lot of time has passed. We are different fighters now," said Golovkin
“This is the right approach to proceed. Not looking back at the two previous fights and practicing with this idea which was a separate fight.
"I'm sure it won't be an easy fight. My opponent is a champion, he has four belts, and he's arguably the best fighter in that heavyweight."
While Canelo has experience with this new weight, Golovkin does not, but he remains confident, despite being eight years older than his 32-year-old opponent.
"I jumped into heavyweight for the first time and I was up against the best fighter in that class," said Golovkin.
“Most likely I will feel refreshed in that weight category. I think I will be ready for the physical point of view.
"I think I will feel more comfortable in that heavyweight. On the other hand, I have to say that I feel very comfortable in my class. At 160."
Golovkin and Alvarez will compete on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with four belts at stake.
