When Hamilton Joined Ricciardo's Signature "Shoey" Celebration On The Podium

JAKARTA - Daniel Ricciardo did not expect that Lewis Hamilton, who won the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, would participate in a "shoey" celebration on the podium. Australian Ricciardo finishes third at Imola on Sunday, November 1.

The last time Ricciardo was on the podium was when he finished third at the Nurburgring, Germany, on October 11, but the Renault rider was so happy he forgot to do his signature celebration, drinking champagne from the shoes he wore on the podium.

The podium at the Eifel Grand Prix is the first time he has presented to Renault, and the first time since 2018 for Ricciardo when he was still racing for Red Bull.

"I was just about to drink one fresh and I heard Lewis say 'take off your other shoe'," Ricciardo said as quoted by Antara from Reuters.

"And I said it was impossible ... Because actually, I think three years ago on the podium he said: 'I would never even do that, I would never drink it. You can offer me, you can force me, I won't. will ever do that. 'And he's even asking for it today.

"So it surprised me, but 2020 was a strange year so it was fun."

Hamilton said it tasted like 'toe jam' after drinking champagne from Ricciardo shoes.

"Of course it doesn't feel good," said the English rider.

"I mean I don't really like champagne, but it sure tastes worse. But the positive thing is that Daniel's mum sees it as cheerful, so I'm grateful for that."

Ricciardo's first podium for Renault last month means team boss Cyril Abiteboul must be willing to be tattooed according to Ricciardo's choice following a deal they made last year.

However, the lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe has not yet made it possible to do so and Ricciardo said there would be no second tattoo.

"He actually just said: 'Congratulations, but I can't get a second tattoo'," said Ricciardo. "So maybe someone else on the team."

The racer, who will join McLaren next year, did not expect to finish on the podium at Imola, which has held Formula 1 races since 2006, thanks to a calendar of seasons affected by the global health crisis.

He briefly stayed on P5 with 15 laps remaining when the Red Bull Max Verstappen car suffered a tire burst while in second position and the Safety Car was expelled.

Then Racing Point rider Sergio Perez stepped into the pits, which made Ricciardo's smile even wider.

"It's quite strange actually, (on the podium) the first and the second from close range. This is incredible," said Ricciardo.
