JAKARTA - The world football organization (FIFA) has increased the maximum number of players for a team at this year's World Cup to 26 players.

FIFA reasoned that the change was due to the unusual timing of the tournament and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the team during the World Cup event in Qatar from November 21 to December 18.

"The number of players who can be included in the final list has been increased to a minimum of 23 and a maximum of 26," FIFA said in a statement.

"No more than 26 people (so 15 substitutes and 11 team officials) will be allowed to sit on the team bench."

UEFA took a similar decision last year allowing teams to select three additional players for the European Cup due to the pandemic.

The International Football Association Board this month gave the green light for the use of five substitutions in matches initially introduced as an adjustment to the rules due to COVID-19.
