Axelsen Reveals Reasons For Withdrawing From Swiss Open, Ginting Has A Great Chance To Win The Title

JAKARTA - The world number one men's singles badminton player, Viktor Axelsen delivered a surprising decision to withdraw from the Swiss Open 2022 tournament. This Danish athlete did this due to health problems.

Axelsen just won the All England title last weekend. At the Swiss Open 2022, he could add to his collection of titles. However, the situation said otherwise, through his social media Axelsen expressed the reason he chose to resign.

"Hi guys. At the end of yesterday's match I started to feel uncomfortable and after waking up this morning I still don't feel well. I was hoping to recover and get ready to fight again today, but that didn't happen," tweeted Axelsen.

"I'm very disappointed about this because I really enjoyed playing here in Switzerland and have been looking forward to seeing how I can do it this week. The organizers did a great job of trying to do their best for the sport here, so I'm sad that I have to withdraw from the sport. my match today," he continued in a different tweet.

In the Swiss Open 2022 tournament, Axelsen actually managed to step up to the second round. The result was secured by Axelsen after defeating the Indonesian men's singles, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo 21-15 and 21-12.

After that match, the 2020 Olympic gold medalist should meet Kashyap Parupalli in the round of 16. However, Axelsen's decision to withdraw then made Parupalli step into the next round without breaking a sweat.

On the other hand, Axelsen's decision to withdraw actually benefits the Indonesian representative, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, who is one block away from the defending Swiss Open champion.

Ginting had previously been confirmed to face Arnaud Merkle in the second round. If he wins, Ginting has the potential to meet Axelsen. However, Axelsen resigned and Ginting's chance to advance to the top was wide open.

If you look at the drawing chart, Ginting is the badminton player with the highest ranking compared to his opponents in the top block. The record also opened up more opportunities for Ginting to steal the lead.

Besides Ginting, another Indonesian representative who is still standing in the men's singles sector is Jonatan Christie. Jojo who is in the lower block will meet Ng Tze Yong in the round of 16.
