Controlled COVID-19 Infection, GP Eifel Will Be Attended By 20 Thousand Spectators

JAKARTA - Next month's Eifel Grand Prix at the German Nuerburgring race track can be attended by up to 20 thousand spectators. Reportedly, the COVID-19 infection in the area was under control.

"Permits for 20,000 fans are in a state decree allowing up to 20 percent of stadium capacity for major sporting events if infection rates are not conspicuous and public infrastructure allows social distancing rules to be met," the Ahrweiler District Council said as quoted by Antara, Monday, September 21.

Tickets for the October 11 race went on sale shortly after the decision was made. Nuerburgring can usually accommodate more than 100 thousand spectators.

Germany reported 922 more positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday for a total death toll of 9,386.

The old Nuerburgring was a well-known venue prior to the Second World War for grand prix racing and its renovated circuit last featured in the Formula 1 world championships in 2013.

The circuit sank into bankruptcy in 2012 and changed ownership in 2014.

Meanwhile, six-times world champion Lewis Hamilton has won six of the nine races this season and is 55 points clear of second-placed Valtteri Bottas in the standings with eight laps remaining.
