JAKARTA - Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky has joined his country's military reserves to fight the Russian invasion.
The 36-year-old has no military experience, but is ready to train and fight for his country.
"Of course, I will fight, that's the only reason I tried to come back," he said in an interview with Sky News quoted from Marca, Tuesday, March 1.
"I signed up for the military reserve last week. I have no military experience, but I do have experience with weapons personally."
He currently has family in Ukraine and explains how they are dealing with the situation.
"My father and brothers are surgeons, they are stressed," Stakhovsky added.
"I talk to them a lot. They're sleeping in the basement now."
The Ukrainian turned professional in 2003 and reached a career-high ranking of 31 in the world.
He won four ATP titles - Zagreb Indoors 2008, St. 2009 Petersburg Open, 2010 Rosmalen Championships, and 2010 Connecticut Open.
In 2013, he became known to the sporting audience after beating Switzerland's Roger Federer 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 on Center Court at Wimbledon.
