Winning Over India, The Indonesian Men's Badminton Team Qualifies For The BATC Semifinals As Group Winners

JAKARTA – The Indonesian men's badminton team won over India in the final match of Group A of the 2022 Asian Team Badminton Championships (BATC). This result makes the Red and White team entitled to qualify with the status of group winners.

Indonesia lost points in the first and last match to end the duel with a final score of 3-2 at the Setia City Convention Center, Selangor, Malaysia, on Friday, February 18.

Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, who played in the first match, lost to former world number one Lakshya Sen at the junior level. The Indonesian representative was bent with a score of 21-18, 27-25 in 46 minutes.

Indonesia then gained three consecutive numbers after that. The victory of Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin, Ikhsan Leonardo Imanuel Rumbay, and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana, managed to change the scoreboard to 3-1.

Leo/Daniel won over Manjit Singh Khwairakpam/Dingku Singh Konthoujam, Ikhsan beat Kiran George, while Bagas/Fikri had a shortest 22 minutes to beat Hariharan Amsakarunan/Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi.

Of the five Indonesian representatives who took part in this match, only Ikhsan and Yonathan Ramlie went into the match in three sets. Ikhsan played a 66-minute match to win with a final score of 21-13, 17-21, 21-10.

Meanwhile, Jonathan experienced the opposite fate. He came back after losing the first set, but couldn't keep up his form and had to give up 12-21, 21-15, 17-21 to Mithun Manjunath.

On Thursday, the men's team rose to the top of the group after beating Korea 3-2. Korea, which managed to beat Hong Kong today, qualified for the semifinals by holding the status of runner-up.

Previously, the women's team also managed to qualify for the semifinals with the status of winners of Group Z. Gregoria and his friends wiped out all matches with a win, including defeating South Korea on Thursday, February 17 yesterday.

The men's team is the defending champion in the competition that will qualify for the Thomas and Uber Cups. In the previous edition in 2020, the Garuda squad came home with the title after winning over Malaysia when the championship was held in the Philippines.
