JAKARTA - Rafael Nadal said winning the Australian Open title on Sunday was one of the most emotional moments of his career as the Spaniard broke his record 21 men's Grand Slam by beating Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the final.
Nadal battled from two sets down to win 2-6 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4 7-5 and break three sets for the most titles in men's, with the Spaniard ahead of rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
The 35-year-old had little hope for a title in the season opener after being sidelined for much of the 2021 season due to a career-threatening foot problem and contracting COVID-19.
"It was one of the most emotional matches in my tennis career. I don't know what to say. For me, it was amazing," Nadal said, quoted by Reuters.
"To be honest, a month and a half ago, I didn't know if I could go back on tour and play tennis again. And today, in front of all of you, carrying this trophy with me... You really don't know how much I struggled to be here."
"Having the immense support I received over the course of three weeks will be in my heart forever."
The win was Nadal's second title at Melbourne Park after he won in 2009.
"There might be a chance I would say it was my last Australian Open but no, I have a lot of energy to keep going," said Nadal.
"I can't explain the feeling I have right now, but I will continue to try my best and keep coming to Melbourne Park," said Rafael Nadal.
