JAKARTA - The General Chair of the Central Board of the Indonesian Basketball Association (PP Perbasi) Danny Kosasih welcomed the idea of re-launching the women's basketball competition in Indonesia.

The vacancy of the women's basketball competition is an obstacle for potential basketball players to channel their talents. For this reason, Perbasi appreciates the idea of reviving the Women's Basketball League in Indonesia.

"When something small is done together, it will be big," said Danny Kosasih as quoted from Antara.

Danny conveyed this support when he attended the opening of an open tournament organized by the Cirebon Young Generation basketball club (GMC) on Sunday, January 23.

The tournament was held to commemorate the 11th anniversary of GMC. A total of eight teams participated in the senior and school level categories.

Besides GMC as the host, three other teams that participated in the senior category were Surabaya Fever, Budi Luhur University, and Showtime Ina.

Meanwhile, for the school level category, SMA BPK Penabur Cirebon, SMA Kharisma Bangsa, PPOP Bogor, and PPOP Indramayu participated.

"It's difficult to find a women's team (senior), but in this tournament there are four, that's already incredible. I hope this can be a good example and the women's league can get back on track," Danny said.

The Indonesian Women's Basketball League has actually been held since 2011. However, the competition has been suspended since 2017.

Srikandi Cup as a substitute tournament has also been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Srikandi Cup manager feels that he cannot afford to hold a tournament in the midst of a pandemic because it costs too much for health protocols.

The owner and coach of GMC, Wahyu Gunarto, admitted that he was moved to hold an open tournament to fill the void in the national women's basketball competition.

“I am sad to meet a female player who still has potential, but does not have the stage to act. My hope is to start small first, hopefully with this event it can become an annual agenda and fill the void,” he said.
