JAKARTA - Another proud achievement has been achieved by Indonesian athletes in the international arena. This time, Indonesia won the gold medal in the Taekwondo World Championship through Andi Sultan.

Participating in the Online 2021 World Taekwondo Poomsae Open Challenge Final, Andi Sultan who entered the male cadet freestyle category successfully recorded a score of 6,220. In the assessment which was held on December 20-23, Andi succeeded in outperforming representatives from Iran, Mexico and Macau.

Andi's total score brought him a gold medal for Indonesia, while the representative of Iran, M Habibzadeh had to settle for silver after getting a score of 5,960. The bronze medal was won jointly by O. Martinez (Mexico) and H.Shi (Macao) with a score of 5,750 and 5,500, respectively.

For Andi's achievement, the General Chairperson of PBTI, Thamrin Marzuki, expressed his appreciation. He said that the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic did not dampen the enthusiasm of the athletes to continue to excel.

"As the Chairperson of PBTI, I feel proud that our young athletes have excelled at the global level. This shows that even during the COVID-19 pandemic, athlete development at the center and in the regions continues to run optimally," Thamrin said as quoted by Antara, Friday.

In this Taekwondo World Championship, Indonesia not only sent Andi as a representative, there were also two representatives from West Java, namely M. Nadim Faturrahman and Naylana Khansa Janneta.

However, Nadim who fell in the recognize male cadet category and Naylana in the female cadet freestyle failed to contribute a medal.

World Taekwondo (WT) itself held this G2 level event online or virtual because it took place in the midst of a pandemic. Previously, there had been a series of World Taekwondo Poomsae Open Challenges I, II, and III. That way, this competition is the grand final or the final round of the series.
