JAKARTA - Stefano Pioli said the final match in Group B of the Champions League against Liverpool would be an important test for AC Milan in translating their ambition to maintain competitiveness in the domestic and European arenas.

Milan currently occupies third place in the standings and still has a chance to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League if they beat Liverpool at the San Siro on Wednesday morning.

"We are only focused on tomorrow's match. The club's target is to remain competitive both in Italy and in Europe," Pioli was quoted as saying on Milan's official website, reported by Antara, Tuesday, December 7.

"We want to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, but if we have to go down to the Europa League, we will do it in the best way."

"Whatever it is, the most important thing is tomorrow's game, and we want to test our abilities," he added.

Pioli insists that his team must be in top form and be able to exploit every gap in Liverpool's back line, which is synonymous with implementing a high defensive line.

He also hopes that the presence of supporters at the San Siro will give Milan players an injection of confidence to present the best performance.

"In the previous meeting, we were under a lot of pressure and looked passive when we didn't have the ball. Those aspects have to be improved," he said.

"We now have more knowledge of the space that may arise in their back line."

"If we can handle the pressure, the space will open up, giving us the opportunity to spread danger," Pioli added.

Pioli hopes that figures like Rade Krunic, Brahim Diaz, and Junior Messias can take advantage of this open space and have the opportunity to make a difference in tomorrow's match.

"We believe that we are a strong team, and so are they. We want to test our abilities against the best, try to get the best results," he said.

"Victory can only be achieved through sacrifice, determination, motivation, and composure at a tactical level," concluded Pioli.
