JAKARTA - Borussia Dortmund canceled ticket sales for Saturday's match against Bayern Munich due to the COVID-19 situation in Germany.

Germany, currently struggling to cope with the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, reported its highest COVID-19-related death toll since mid-February on Wednesday (446), with the total death toll rising to 101,790.

"Due to the current COVID-19 situation in Germany, Borussia Dortmund canceled early ticket sales for the Bundesliga's biggest match against Bayern Munich on Saturday," Dortmund said in a statement.

"Those who have purchased tickets will get their money back. All 67,000 tickets available... were sold out in the last few days.

"However, the state government is currently looking to reduce game capacity in the next few days due to the pandemic."

On Tuesday, Germany's eastern state of Saxony said Germany's central government would decide on Thursday whether all Bundesliga matches should be played behind closed doors.

The southern state of Bavaria has asked for matches to be played behind closed doors. The home of Bayern will also impose a spectator ban if it is not implemented nationally.

Clubs in Germany played in empty stadiums last year when matches resumed following a pause due to the pandemic.

Dortmund are currently second in the league standings with 30 points after 13 games, one point behind Bayern.
