JAKARTA - AC Milan finally picked up their first win in the Champions League this season after defeating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in a trip to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, Spain, for the Group B match on Wednesday local time.

This result is not only Milan's first win in the Champions League after a seven-year absence, but also opens the opportunity to qualify for the last 16, because in another match Liverpool silenced Porto 2-0.

Launching Antara, Milan temporarily rose to third place in the standings, displacing Atletico as caretaker of the standings.

Both collected four points and head-to-head records beat each other with a 2-2 aggregate goal, Milan has a goal productivity advantage over Atletico.

Junior Messias became the only goal scorer for Milan's victory just three minutes before the dispersal of normal time.

The Brazilian winger scored with a sharp header from close range when he met Franck Kessie's accurate cross.

Three minutes later, Milan almost doubled their lead through Ismael Bennacer's curling shot which was unfortunately blocked by goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

In contrast, Matheus Cunha missed Atletico's golden opportunity to equalize in the first minute of injury time when he picked up Marcos Llorente's cross but finished off target.

Milan, statistically deserved the win as they had almost 58 percent possession throughout the game which they tried to convert with 14 attempted shots, four of which were on target.

In contrast, Atletico appeared relatively blunt and only created six chances, two of which could be secured by Milan goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu.

This result makes the competition for the last 16 tickets in Group B even more heated between Milan, Atletico, and Porto because all three still have the same chance of qualifying alongside Liverpool, which was already swinging two weeks ago.

The final set of Group B matches are scheduled for November 8, when Porto hosts Atletico at the Dragao Stadium and Milan await Liverpool's arrival at the San Siro.
