JAKARTA - Indonesian men's singles Jonatan Christie advanced to the second round of the Indonesia Open 2021 after eliminating Malaysia's Liew Daren in the Super 1000 level badminton tournament at the Bali International Convention Center, Nusa Dua, Wednesday.

Jonathan, who came as the sixth seed, only took 35 minutes to finish the match with a score of 21-14, 21-15.

The victory was the third time for Jojo, Jonatan's nickname, in his four meetings against Daren.

Jojo admitted that he learned a lot from his mistakes playing at the Indonesia Masters 2021 last week when he was knocked out by Indian player Kidambi Srikath in the second round.

"I learned from the last defeat against Srikanth (Kidambi) at the Indonesia Masters 2021. I want to be consistent with my strategy and I want to apply it to the Indonesia Open 2021," said the world number eight badminton player as reported by Antara.

"Thank God today I was able to play with the desired strategy and I could apply it and everything went well," added Jojo.

In the second round on Thursday, Jojo will challenge fellow Indonesian representative, Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, who qualified for the round of 16 after defeating non-training player Henrikho Kho Wibowo with a score of 21-11, 21-18.

Meanwhile, in another match, fifth seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting failed to advance to the last 16 after being defeated by France's Christo Popov 17-21, 18-21.

Previously, another men's singles player, Shesar Hiren Rhustavito, had already passed the round of 32 last Tuesday after getting rid of Thailand's representative Sitthikom Thammasin.
