JAKARTA - Five German national team players have been quarantined after one of them tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of this week's 2022 World Cup Qualifier against Liechtenstein.

While not naming the player infected with COVID-19, the German Football Association (DFB) said Tuesday the player has been fully vaccinated and is asymptomatic.

The other four players, who tested negative, must continue to undergo the quarantine process.

According to German newspaper Bild, the player who has tested positive is defender Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich.

"The number of coronavirus infections has recently increased again nationally. That's why we consistently implemented hygiene and behavior rules during the last international matches of the year," said Germany team director Oliver Bierhoff, quoted by Reuters.

"This news is very bittersweet just before the last two World Cup qualifying matches - for the coaching team and for the whole team. However, health comes first."

Last month Germany became the first team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar by beating North Macedonia 4-0 to secure the top spot in Group J with two games remaining.

They host Liechtenstein on Friday, 12 November before traveling to Armenia for their final qualifier on Monday, 15 November.

They lead the group with 21 points from eight games, eight ahead of second-placed Romania.
