JAKARTA - The women's refereeing team took on the duties of men's soccer matches in the Jordan Pro League for the first time on Tuesday, as part of the country's efforts to promote the game of soccer among women.

Referee Esra'a Al-Mobideen and assistant referees Islam Al-Abadi, Sabreen Al-Abadi and Haneen Murad handled Sahab's 4-1 win over Al-Baqa'a in the final round of the competition.

"At first, the players were smiling in the tunnel when we first entered because a girl was leading, and they were surprised by the idea," Al-Mobideen said.

"But once the game started there were no jokes and everyone got serious," he added.

The Jordanian Football Association wants more women to get involved in the sport and Al-Mobideen is determined to make a difference.

"Having influence on society is my ambition," said Al-Mobideen.

"It's important to have a positive impact on the society I live in. Participating in a professional league will give a good image of female referees.

"I can send a message that women can work in any field," she said.
