BYD M6 DM Rely on Atkinson Engine, Thermal Efficiency Reaches This

JAKARTA - BYD Indonesia brings new technology to the national automotive market, namely Dual Mode (DM), which is embedded in the M6 MPV model, and the technology is also brought to the GIIAS 2026 exhibition.

As the name implies, this Dual Mode system integrates two main driving sources. This car combines a high-performance electric motor with an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) gasoline engine adopted in the Plug-in Hybrid system.

The battery used in the BYD M6 DM has a capacity of 7.4 kWh for the classic variant and 18.3 kWh for the cross variant, and combined with this 1,500 cc 4-cylinder engine is only positioned to help charge the battery.

The BYD M6 DM adopts an improved Atkinson Cycle combustion cycle. This engine has a very fantastic compression ratio, namely 16.0:1. For comparison, even standard cars or sports cars generally only have a compression ratio in the range of 11:1 to 12:1.

This high compression ratio boosts the engine's thermal efficiency to 46.06 percent. This figure is one of the best in the world for the mass-produced gasoline engine category.

"The increase in thermal efficiency reaches 46.06 percent," said Head of Aftersales PT BYD Motor Indonesia, Ubaedillah, when met at ICE BSD, Tangerang, Monday, August 3.

It is worth noting that this good thermal efficiency increases how effectively the heat energy from the fuel is successfully converted into mechanical power, all of which is obtained from a dual electronic thermostat that works with an electric water pump to reduce the heat from the engine.

This thermal efficiency of 46.06 percent was also achieved thanks to EGR to reduce exhaust gas levels and produce better exhaust gas residues. The cooling of the BYD battery blade uses a refrigerant circulated by a compressor

"We use a battery cooling system with refrigerant to exchange the battery heat so that its performance is more stable," he added.

The BYD M6 DM can travel up to 65 kilometers using only 1 liter of fuel, which is certainly quite interesting.
